At the tender age of 4 years old, New Zealand born Helen Anderson started her journey into the magnificant world of dance. She showed promise at an early stage and was lucky enough to start her competition career which was to span 14 years. She still remembers her first competition appearance when she was so exited about getting on stage to dance, she forgot to remove her cardigan that was covering her tutu. Once she became aware of it still being on, she darted to the side of the stage, removed it and carried on with her dance. Twelve years on Helen passed her Advanced R.A.D certificate.

Fresh from high school she was accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington. Whilst at the NZSD she danced with the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company and recalls some of the following ballets she danced in, Napoli, Les Sylphides, The Nutcracker, Serenade, La Giaconda, Pas de Quatre, are just a few she performed in.

Having graduated from NZSD she then headed overseas to successfully complete a Bachelor of Arts in Dance at the wonderful Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. Her BA studies included all aspects of dance ( ballet, contemporary, funk jazz, tap, spanish, character dance, improvisation) and theory subjects in anatomy, music, dance history, kinesiology, dance analysis, dance notation, chorography and stage design. While in Melbourne she toured extensively with the Victorian Arts Dance Company, also cheer leading at the Melbourne Basketball Events Centre and many modeling events and functions at Hotels and large staged events through out Austraila and New Zealand Heading back home to Auckland in 1990 she freelanced to many of Auckland’s leading dance Academies and modeling companies as well as becoming a member of the Northern Ballet Company then moving onto Company Z under the direction of Timothy Gordon a European choreographer visiting New Zealand.

Helen’s biggest dream came true, when in 1995, West Auckland became the home of Rhythm n Steps Dance Academy and the doors were opened. The experience and thorough knowledge of this dramatic hands on principal has seen Rhythm n steps blossom into a highly successful Dance Academy.

Helen says “Rhythm n steps will only grow with such promising young local talent and it will be a joy to have a hand in producing so many young dancers of the future.” Please enjoy your time visiting the academy web site and I trust you will enjoy a little of the magic that we have all become to know as Rhythm n Steps Dance Academy.
